With strong roots in Swedish culinary traditions, we have spent more than six decades creating venues that bring people, flavours and experiences together. From Åke Johansson’s first self-service restaurant at the S:t Erik Fair to today’s restaurants, hotels and conference centres, our commitment to quality, sustainability and care has always been our guiding principle. Today, we unite under the name Food Family – a corporate group where hospitality, service, and a passion for food and drink are at the heart of everything we do, from intimate dinners to large-scale congresses, meetings and banquets.
Since our first service in 1962, Food Family has grown into a strong corporate group where unique brands and venues together create complete experiences in some of Sweden’s most distinctive settings. We bring together a wide spectrum of meetings and dining occasions – from the Nobel Banquet at Stockholm City Hall, winemaker dinners at Stadshuskällaren and theatre dinners at Teaterbaren, to congresses and exhibitions at Stockholmsmässan, Malmömässan and XPO. Not to mention our beautiful Engsholm Castle in Sörmland, where both private guests and conference groups gather in a truly unique castle environment.

Food Family is, at heart, a story about passion – for food, for hospitality, and for people. It began with Åke Johansson in the 1960s, when he opened his first self-service restaurant and beer bar at S:t Eriksmässan in Stockholm. By then, Åke had already gathered experience from some of Europe’s finest dining rooms – from the Ritz in Paris to Stockholm institutions such as Riche and Stallmästaregården – and he carried with him a conviction that gastronomy was about more than what was placed on the plate.
For Åke, the magic lay in the meeting itself: listening to the guest, anticipating needs before they were spoken, and creating experiences marked by care and attention. This philosophy placed him among an exclusive group of Swedish restaurant pioneers – his name is inscribed in Visita’s Hall of Fame, alongside some of the greatest in the industry.
Yet Åke was never one to seek the spotlight. He believed the work should speak for itself – a blend of craftsmanship, thrift, and a natural respect for every guest. These same values were carried forward by his daughters, Maria Stridh and Kerstin Johansson, who took up the baton with the same ambition and presence. Alongside developing the family’s own restaurants, they also gave back to the wider industry through their engagement in Bocuse d’Or, the Swedish Chef of the Year competition, and the training of future chefs.
Today, the next generation has joined the story. Sons Mattias, Fredrik and Johan – together with colleagues who share the same passion – make Food Family exactly what the name suggests: a family. A place where heritage meets the future, where meals become meeting points, and where every guest becomes part of the story.
From the early days in a modest kitchen at S:t Eriksmässan to today’s grand banquets hosting thousands of guests – much has changed. But the love for food, for people, and for the moments created around the table has remained constant.
For us, food is never just nourishment. It is culture, connection, and memory. That is why we are called Food Family.
For us, sustainability is not a side project – it is a way of life and work. It shapes the way we approach food, people, and the environment, and it has been a natural part of our culture since the very beginning.
We draw inspiration from our Swedish heritage – caring for the forests, land, and waters that provide the foundation for high-quality ingredients and pure flavours. With the same care, we take responsibility in how we plan, prepare, serve, use, and reuse. Our waste is converted into biogas, our equipment is chosen to last, and our technology conserves energy, water, and resources. This is how we collectively nurture what we have and leave something better for the future.
